History Of The Franklin Township Fire Department
In the early 1940’s Franklin Township was a short travel distance from the City of Indianapolis. The township consisted of two distinct communities. They were the towns of Wanamaker and Acton. Naturally, as with any community, they needed fire protection. The Wanamaker Fire Department (currently FTFD station 551) was formed in 1947. The Acton Fire Department (currently FTFD station 552) was established in 1948. Finally, the Bunker Hill Fire Department (currently FTFD station 553) was created in 1954 when the western part of the township began to experience residential development.
In 1991 the Trustee and the Township Board made a move to improve services and reduce operational costs by consolidating the three separate fire departments into the newly formed Franklin Township Fire Department. Although unpopular at the time, this merger has proven to be cost effective and has vastly improved the quality of services provided.
In 1997, the winds of change came in again as Franklin Township hired 18 career firefighters. This action eventually moved the department away from relying on volunteers to mainly a career force. Many felt it was a necessary move to meet the continuing demands of a rapidly growing community. Franklin Township currently has 70 personnel operating out of headquarters and four stations located across the township. Fifty-nine township employees are assigned to the suppression division providing not only fire protection but also specialized rescue consisting of; EMS, top-water and dive rescue, auto extrication, trench, confined space, as well as, high and low angle rope rescue. There are seven staff officers working in a number of divisions. The Divisions include Public Safety & Education, Training, EMS, Special Operations, and Suppression. We also have four civilian support staff employees working in maintenance, quartermaster, and public education.
